Today is International Women's Day and the eighth year of the Children Companion Plan. From the ignorant exploration in the starting phase to the establishment in size of thousands of villages, remaining true to their original aspiration, those companion mothers forge ahead and become a typical group that takes care of the left-behind and struggling children, who are also the deliverer of rural children welfare service in the 'last kilometer'.

In the mountains and fields, villages and neighbors, a splash of red appears from time to time, those are companion mothers working in their uniform. The Children Companion Plan has covered 11 provinces, 117 counties, and 1531 villages, raised nearly $200 million, and provided companionship and care for more than 780000 rural children. Children Companion Plan also becomes a people’s livelihood project that keeps children happy, parents relieved, and government trusted.

Children Companion plan works on the care and protection of rural children through systematic and professional training for rural women. This year, the project developed a group of supervisors for those companion mothers, in couple with the projected counties, to provide technical support in the region or across regions and promote the construction of the protective system for the minors.

In 2015, China Foundation for Rural Development launched Children Companion Plan, which, through fostering rural women, conducts the caring and protection work for rural children. Adopting the model of “one person, one home, one link”, the plan establishes a village-level network of guardianship for left-behind children and struggling children with the companion mothers as the starting point, Children Companion Home as the platform, and county-level horizontal linkage mechanism as the safeguard to ensure the children welfare service could be delivered to the ‘last kilometer’. The plan has covered 11 provinces including Sichuan, Guizhou, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Hubei, Anhui, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, and Hubei, 117 counties, and 1531 villages, benefiting more than 780,000 children.
